// HASS //

This round or egg shaped fruit has a medium-thick, dark green, rough, pebbly skin that changes colour to purplish/black when ripe. The skin does not yield to pressure easily, once soft or shriveled, the fruit is overripe. The fruit is small to medium sized with a fairly large seed. The season runs from mid to late April for Limpopo & Mpumalanga until October for Kwa-Zulu Natal. Out of Season fruit is available year round. This variety has the possibility of small fruit in warm areas, requiring added mulch and careful management of nutrition and irrigation.

// LAMB - HASS //

This pear shaped fruit with a flat top or flat “shoulders”, has a finely pebbled and slightly less rough and thicker skin that Hass. It becomes black when ripe. This large sized fruit, has a small to medium sized seed, and matures in the later part of the year, and can be hung late. It can result in biennial bearing. It is more precocious than Hass and has heavy cropping, post harvest it is more sensitive to chilling injury.

// PINKERTON //

This variety has a definite “neck” shape compared to other varieties. It has a thick, rough, dark green coloured skin that stays green when ripe, which does not yield to pressure easily. The fruit is medium to large in size with a medium sized seed. This variety has a short season, May/June for Limpopo & Mpumalanga, July for Kwa-Zulu Natal. Out of Season fruit is not easily available. This variety has large consistent cropping, is precocious (bears at an early age), fruit size is retained under warm conditions, it does have variable fruit shape which makes packing challenging, can experience uneven ripening.

// FUERTE //

“Pear” shaped, sometimes with a long, thinner neck and a flat base. The fruit and seed is medium sized and the season runs from February for Limpopo & Mpumalanga, and from August in Kwa- Zulu Natal. “Out of Season” fruit is available year round. This variety is sensitive to cool temperatures at flowering which can result in poor fruit set, require regular pruning and careful management of nitrogen fertilization.

// EDRANOL //

This avo is oval or pear shaped with a thick green coloured skin with small corky speckles. It stays green coloured when ripe, but the skin shrivels at the stem if picked when not fully mature. The fruit is medium to large with a medium sized seed. The season runs from June/July for Limpopo & Mpumalanga until late September for Kwa-Zulu Natal. Out of Season fruit is available late in the year.

// RYAN //

This “egg” shaped fruit has a slightly rough, dark green skin that stays green when ripe. It has a large fruit and large sized seed. The season runs from August/September for Limpopo & Mpumalanga, October for Kwa-Zulu Natal. Late season fruit is readily available.

// REED //

This “cannonball” shaped fruit has a rough, dark green skin that stays green when ripe. The thick skin does not yield to pressure easily. The fruit is a large to very large size, with a large seed. The season runs from October/November through to January for Limpopo, Mpumalanga and Kwa-Zulu Natal. This variety matures late which can result in biennial bearing, can drop fruit at marketable size resulting in harvesting of immature fruit, mature fruit highly susceptible to loss from frost damage, the columnar growth facilitates high density plantings.
